My theme for the costume for my BFF's wedding/renewal of vows was a music teacher. I don't know why I chose it, I just needed a direction because steampunk is such a huge genre. So I had the idea for the hat to be made from a metronome. I found one at an antique mall that worked out great. As I was trying to decide on the brim, which I could have gone very big widow hat style, but I didn't know how to make a hat and all my research told me that I need special materials and what not. Long story short I had the idea to melt a record (shogun because I wasn't going to listen to it) with my blow dryer to make the hole and shape the curved brim. I covered the raw edge of the record with ribbon and added the metal wife feather. I then added broaches I had made originally for the costume on the curved edge. The record and trims are all one piece so I can remove it from the metronome. I removed the bottom cover of the metronome and added a foam pad and then made a "donut" from tulle to allow me to pin my hair to and around the tulle to secure the metronome to my head.
